¿Cuándo debo tomar omeprazol?

El omeprazol es el fármaco más consumido en España. En los últimos meses hemos sido partícipes de numerosas alertas a cerca del uso del omeprazol y otros fármacos de uso frecuente. Todo medicamento tiene sus efectos secundarios. Por eso, siempre que vamos a usar un medicamento debemos valorar si el beneficio de tomarlo es mayor que riesgo de sus efectos secundarios. Para que el beneficio sea mayor que el riesgo, debemos tomarlo cuando haya una patología o una situación que lo requiera. Si no fuese así, estaríamos sometiéndonos a los efectos secundarios de un fármaco de forma innecesaria.

Así que, consumir medicamentos sí, pero cuando sean necesarios. Hay que hacer un buen uso pero no un abuso.

¿Cuándo se pone tratamiento con omeprazol?

El omeprazol u otro fármaco del grupo de inhibidores de la bomba de protones se usa como tratamiento en las siguientes patologías:

• Reflujo gastroesofágico: el omeprazol se usa como tratamiento de la esofagitis por reflujo, de los síntomas severos de la enfermedad por reflujo y de los síntomas leves que no responden al tratamiento convencional.
• Úlcera péptica: tendrás que someterte a tratamiento con omeprazol si tienes úlcera gástrica, úlcera duodenal o erosiones gastroduodenales.
• Síndrome de Zollinger-Ellison.
• Infección por Helicobacter pylori: el omeprazol forma parte de algunas de las pautas de tratamiento en la erradicación de Helicobacter pylori y prevención de recaídas de úlcera péptica en pacientes con úlceras asociadas a este microorganismo.

 

¿Es necesario hacer un tratamiento con omeprazol en alguna otra situación?

El omeprazol está indicado si vas a tomar algún antiinflamatorio, para prevenir la aparición de posibles hemorragias digestivas sólo en las siguientes situaciones:

• Por edad, si tienes más de 65 años y vas a someterte a algún tratamiento con antiinflamatorios.
• Si has tenido alguna úlcera péptica o clínica de dispepsia y vas a seguir algún tratamiento con antiinflamatorios.
• Si vas a hacer un tratamiento con 2 antiinflamatorios o más, incluyendo en este grupo el tratamiento con corticoides.
• Si estás en tratamiento con algún anticoagulante y te pautan un tratamiento con antiinflamatorios. Si estás en tratamiento con sintrom, usaremos mejor el pantoprazol que el omeprazol.

Si no te encuentras en uno de los supuestos anteriores, aunque tomes un tratamiento con antiinflamatorios, no está indicado el tratamiento con omeprazol.

 

¿Cuánto tiempo debo tomar el omeprazol?

Tu médico te indicará cuanto tiempo debes tomar el omeprazol. Si lo vas a tomar porque vas a seguir un tratamiento con antiinflamatorios y tienes alguna de las indicaciones citadas anteriormente, lo normal es tomarlo durante el tiempo que dure el tratamiento.

En otras situaciones, tu médico será quien valore cuanto tiempo debes tomarlo en función de la causa por la que lo tomes. Hay veces en que hay que mantener el tratamiento durante un tiempo indefinido.

 

¿Qué dosis es la recomendada?

Normalmente se toma una cápsula o comprimido de 20mg al día por la mañana. Hay ocasiones en que es necesario doblar la dosis y tu médico te indicará que tomes 40mg al día.

 

¿Cómo debo tomarlo?

Debe tomarse preferiblemente en una sola toma, por las mañanas, tragando las cápsulas enteras con un poco de agua o zumo. Si tu médico te ha doblado la dosis, pueden tomarse las 2 cápsulas/comprimidos juntas por la mañana. Como alternativa se puede recomendar 1 por la mañana y otra por la noche.

 

¿Qué puedo hacer si no consigo tragar las cápsulas?

Si tienes dificultad para deglutir, puedes abrir las cápsulas e ingerir su contenido o dispersar el contenido de las cápsulas en un líquido ligeramente ácido, como zumo, yogur o leche agria. Esta suspensión deberá de tomarse antes de 30minutos.
Nunca se deben partir, pulverizar, ni masticar los comprimidos ni el contenido de las cápsulas.

 

¿Qué hago si me olvido de tomarlo?

Debes tomarlo en el momento en que caes en la cuenta de que se te olvidó. Al día siguiente vuelve a tomarlo a la hora habitual.
Si te acuerdas cuando ya está muy próxima la siguiente toma, espera a la siguiente toma. No tomes doble dosis para compensar la que se le olvidó.

 

¿Cuáles son los efectos secundarios más frecuentes?

El omeprazol puede causar estreñimiento, gases, náuseas, vómitos y dolor de cabeza. Si al tomar omeprazol notases alguno de estos síntomas o cualquier otro, consulta a tu médico.

 

¿Qué puede pasarme si tomo durante mucho tiempo omeprazol?

El omeprazol puede interferir en la absorción de la vitamina B12. Un déficit de vitamina B12 puede ser causa de demencia, anemia, daño neurológico y otras complicaciones. Por eso es importante tomar el omeprazol sólo cuando esté indicado.

 

Recuerda: haz un uso responsable de los fármacos y consulta siempre a tu médico.
